Stress Management Tips for Students

Stress Management Tips for Students

Student life can be very stressful. The demands in school and at home can overwhelm your schedule and energy. Learning to balance stress must be emphasized on students, as younger generations still cannot fully comprehend and cope with most of lifes realities. There are several factors that can trigger stress for students and a variety of interventions are also easily and readily available to help them manage.

As a student, you should understand youre under stress when you feel down, are not in the mood, have trouble sleeping, or do not want to eat. You may also be more irritable, anxious, and tired. Your schoolwork is not doing so great and you dont feel enthusiastic about home or speaking to anyone. The stresses you felt before were a little manageable, but you have trouble coping and realize that you have to develop ways to alleviate your stress before you burn out completely.

1. Relax and physically remove yourself momentarily from the cause of the stress. Take a walk, breathe deeply, and close your eyes if you want to visualize a more calm and tranquil setting. If circumstances do not allow, you may stretch in your seat.

2. Stress can take a toll on your health, so it is vital that you eat, sleep, and exercise properly. Avoid too much sugar, alcohol and caffeine and eat nutritious food. Sleep is one factor that most students dont get a lot of, so try to get a full eight-hour sleep to rejuvenate and recover. Exercise can also boost your self-esteem and so do social activities, so try to find some that you enjoy.

3. Caffeine, drugs, alcohol, and smoking increases stress levels by constricting blood vessels and disrupting proper thinking and decision making.

4. Find a recreational activity you can do after class. Even for just fifteen to thirty minutes, do something you enjoy or are good at like sketching, listening to music or writing.

5. Create a schedule and stick with it. Some extra-curricular activities may sound like fun, but they may only disrupt your other priorities and keep you too busy intensifying your current stress level. Maximize your time on academics and important homework; and avoid overstaying in one activity when your routine suggests you move on to the next.

6. Organize your things and your living space. It will save you more time, as well as avoid losing or misplacing important objects during exams or recitations.

7. Plan your leisure. Spontaneity is not always advisable although most student parties and hangouts usually happen unplanned. At least, limit your time if you have school priorities, as overstaying will only result in lack of sleep. Save your fun for the weekend.

8. Talk to a close friend, teacher or counselor. These people care about you and understand what youre going through, so they can recommend a variety of techniques to help you manage stress.

It is quite difficult to avoid stress when youre altogether balancing having fun in your youth and family life, and satisfying the demands of your school. Whats important is you realize your priorities and back them up with consistency and discipline. In the end, you can pat yourself in the back for managing it all and being well on your way to post-school life success.

Reduce Stress and Be Happy

Anything taken too much is bad for the health. A little stress is actually good, as it could serve to help you function at your best. However, stress that seems a little too much could take a physical, as well as mental, toll to your body. Stress should be managed in order for depression or anxiety to be prevented.

So how should you do it then? The following are tips and advice to help manage stress.

Write it out, schedule it out.

It is best to write down everything that seems to be overwhelming. You will find a things-to-do-list much easier to manage than having errands all crumpled up in your head. Writing down the tasks, and putting a specific schedule and time to do them, helps anyone manage activities one chunk at a time. Crossing out an activity that has already been accomplished is very rewarding and could actually help you feel more relaxed when doing the other tasks at hand.

One at a time works.

Focus and put all your attention specifically on one task at one time. It does not help to feel panicky about the other undone or to-do tasks. Thinking about them only adds unnecessary stress and could even hamper in doing the task you are attempting to accomplish at present.

Relax and take it slow.

At least, try not to expend too much energy on activities that are currently not priorities. This is in order for your energy to be not easily expended on the tasks that are not that important, at least for now.

Delegate, delegate, delegate.

You need not do everything all at once, and you need not do everything on your own. Ask for help, get help, or pay for help. When there is a feeling of being overwhelmed that is cropping up, hire someone to mow the lawn or get a sitter for your children. The feeling of being pressed to finish something on time will somehow be eliminated if tasks are delegated. It takes a load off unnecessary worry and anxiety. Moreover, it is easier checking up on how things are, than worrying yourself sick doing everything on your own, all at once.

Give yourself a reward.

You deserve it. Acknowledging your accomplishments, no matter how big or small, is an effort that is necessary before getting on to the next tasks and activities. It reduces stress and could even make you happier in doing the next task.

Give yourself a break.

You need it to be more productive. A ten to fifteen minute break during your work is necessary. Go visit a caf nearby, take a quick brisk walk, or do anything to put your mind off work, at least for a while. This is necessary to refresh and recharge. Believe it or not, you can also stay in your work and sit with your eyes closed as you visualize a peaceful landscape or a relaxing scene. This frees the stress from your muscles and your mind.

Relax and be cool. Doing so makes you healthier, happier, and a lot more productive.

Quit Worrying

According to Michael Gelb and Tony Buzan, authors of the book Lessons from the Art of Juggling, worry is a negative visualization. Worrying over things just leads to tension, stress, and exhaustion. Therefore, instead of draining your energy and time worrying, read the following guidelines to help you stay positive and start thinking of far more important and productive things.

Identify The Things That Worry You. The first step in combating your anxiety is to identify the things or scenarios that worry you. Is it the thought of failing your finals? Or the idea that your partner might be cheating on you? It can be many factors. Listing down the things that bother you will help you see a clear picture or the reasons why they worry you. It will also help you think of possible ways how to counter-attack the anxious feelings.

Share Your Worries. There is nothing more soothing than the thought being able to share with someone your thoughts and worries. Not that this friend of yours has the solution to your problem; but the simple idea that someone knows how you feel is already relieving. After a strenuous day at work, it is cathartic to release the tension you are feeling to you partner. Although you know he cant do something about pressure you feel on the presentation you are going to show the next day, simply knowing that he supports and understands you is already enough to ease your anxiety.

Trust Yourself. Each time you find yourself worrying about future events, remind yourself that you are in control and are capable of handling anything. Above anyone else, you should be the first one to trust yourself. Recall some events in your life when you were able to surpass the things that worry you and realize that if you were able to do it before, then you are certainly capable of doing it again. Bear in mind that the things that dont kill you, will make you strong.

Keep Yourself Busy. Usually, the worrisome thoughts find their way into your head, especially when it is idle. So instead of obsessing over something that is not worth your time, try to do something that will keep you busy and away from apprehensions.

Be Optimistic. More often than not, people tend to miss the present happenings in their life because they are so preoccupied thinking what will happen in the future. Instead of anticipating negative events, make it a practice to think positive thoughts. Always hope for the best. It does wonders! When fear starts crossing your mind, always keep your head high, hold on to that rabbits tail, and tell yourself that this, too, will definitely pass.
